My first contract on going freelance was for a chocolate factory who wanted an illustrative led designer to produce their packaging.I was so bloody nervous I could barely breath whilst waiting to be called into the meeting room with my pitch.
I entered on wobbly legs. Took a deep breath and rather over enthusiastically (as usual!) presented my ideas. They all seemed to be engrossed in my rather manic presentation.
My mobile phone began to ring. I had no idea what the thing to do was whilst talking to a chief exec and his crew in their wood panelled posh boardroom. Chief exec eventually said “are you going to answer that?”
I rather embarresedly reached into my handbag and answered the ringing phone. Everything felt wrong. The phone was still ringing. Everyone was staring at me. I stared at the banana in my hand which I had just rather frantically said “Hello? Hello? Yes?” into.
Contract was great – kept me going with bananas and chocolate for years.
