It was recently my mother’s eurhumth birthday! I took a photo of her 3 favourite grandsons in a boy pile which I had printed as an aluminium print for her to hang on her wall. To go with this I figured she needed a designer birthday cake.
A long time ago (at least it feels like it now!) mum had written on a post it note and stuck it on the wall “whatever storm is passing what will survive is love” – it appeared on her wall shortly after my father died. So it has quite a lot of resonance. I made this into a design – see above. I decided to take this design to Naomi Morgan Cakes (Naomi lives up the road from me in Well Street – we are a very creative bunch here in Well Street) to see if she could ice this design onto a cake for me as the three figures were my mum, my brother and I.
The ensuing cake was fabulous. Naomi is as passionate about cake making as I am about design – very rare to find another truly obsessive person but hoorah! I loved how she took my design and managed to interpret it without losing sight of what it was. The cake tasted mega scrum too – even my mother who made cakes and was a caterer for many years gave her eleven out of ten. High praise indeed!
What would you have iced on your birthday cake? What would your fave filling combo be?
I guess I must be a traditionalist at heart – it has to be vanilla sponge, buttercream and raspberry jam – I think I would have a skull and crossbones design – with a grin! Maybe I could get Mr Depp to come in his Jack Sparrow outfit (swoon!)
Naomi can be followed on Facebook at Naomi Morgan Cakes. Don’t go if you’re hungry!
