Campaign marketing for competitions

Sustainability is a tricky one to promote. The word has been so abused, it has lost its meaning. When I was contacted and asked to help promote sustainability in schools, I knew it would be complex and there would be some deep thinking to do.

The competition was to engage 10-20 year olds in creating an environmental solution to improving their leisure or educational spaces. The winners with the best ideas received a prize of £1000 to use for the project they had come up with.

Working with stakeholders at Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, I developed a campaign concept used Glastonbury as the hook, as it is a plastic-free festival. I designed the campaign material using an edgy, slight street style, with a campaign message of “cut waste, recycle, encourage nature”.

The digital illustrations were created in photoshop using photography and painted layers.

Campaign design for sustainable business

The leaflets designed for the campaign featured the digital illustrations, to bring this to life I doodled all over the entry form to make it more engaging to fill in. I did a very small print run as I realised it would be a small focussed campaign.

I created a leads list which pulled in many entrants. Entrants covered subjects such as period poverty, outdoor classrooms, ponds, upgrading recycling schemes and art made from waste materials.

Campaign success for sustainable business

We had many entries. One of the prize winners was Children’s Hospital School Leicester. Which won the money to develop its outside area and make a more viable rain shelter for when the children are working in the gardens, enjoying nature and growing vegetables for the school kitchen.
